Keifer

The darkness shrouded him as he traveled in the jalopy of a truck to the main headquarters for the Honor Guard located in the central city. The headlights of the truck danced along the trees that lined either side of the road. The craggily shaped limbs seemed to reach for him, creating a surreal feel to the trip. Anxiety welled up inside him, gripping his stomach in a knot. He had no idea why the General had summoned him. But he had a bad feeling about it and suspected it had something to do with his treatment of Kael. Anger rose like bile at the thought of him, the scum sucking Gray. He glanced at the driver who silently steered the truck on its course. He eyed him suspiciously and wondered if the soldier knew anything about this. He was after all the General’s personal assistant, he had to know something. He narrowed his eyes, the rage building within and no one to take it out on. Twisting his hands together in nervous anger while the urge to beat the man bloody and get him to spill what he knew seethed deep.

Instead, he pasted a friendly smile on his face. “So, you’re the personal assistant to the General, huh? Did he say what this meeting was about?” Keifer asked, trying to school his voice into a modicum of pleasantry. He shoved his hand the man’s direction. “The name’s Keifer, First Rank Keifer. Yours is?” He asked.

The man pressed his lips together and shook his head. “The name’s Ryder sir, and no sir, he doesn’t feel the need to confide in me; I’m a mere foot soldier,” he replied, his voice dripping with disdain.

He didn’t like First Rank Keifer. He’d heard terrible things about this man in the conversations of the General and others. It was hard not to let his feelings show.

“Oh, I’m not worried, just a bit curious,” Keifer replied.

The little ass kisser knew alright. He knew why the General wanted to see him; he just wasn’t going to tell him. It seemed to him as if this low rank soldier took pleasure in the fact that he was in the dark, so to speak, and was enjoying his discomfort. Well, he’d make sure to take care of this later. He sneered at the man and emitted a barely audible growl.

He wasn’t against using his fists on a lower ranking member of the honor guard; in fact, he almost rather enjoyed it when he was given the opportunity. If they stepped out of line or were insubordinate, he’d put them right back in line. This piece of trash, his arrogant attitude, was, in Keifer’s opinion, far out of line for his lowly status, refusing to tell a first rank what he asked. Yes, after this meeting was over and they were on their way back to the village… He’d enjoy teaching this boy a lesson he’d not soon forget.

It wasn’t long before the vehicle came to a stop in front of the General’s quarters.
